Lyrics born (real name: Tom Shimura) is a Japanese-born, Berkeley, California-based MC, beatmaker and producer who runs the Quannum Projects label with DJ Shadow and made some noise as half of the underground hip-hop duo Latyrx. On his solo debut, Shimura draws from funk, reggae and rock, even as he blurs their distinctions. He flows with an almost Southern smoothness, plowing through syllables faster than an ear can discern on upbeat tracks such as "Rise and Shine." But he also loves hooks, and every track on Later That Day . . . has a brain-embedding tune, groove, joke or observation. It's the rare hip-hop album that's as free and fun as it is tight.
