Album Reviews
Louis XIV are a San Diego foursome nearly as glam as their
wig-wearing, Versailles-building namesake. Partly recorded in a Paris
warehouse, The Best Little Secrets Are Kept pairs the thrilling
hedonism of early-Seventies T. Rex and David Bowie with cartoonishly
sexed-up vocals that make winking fun of glitter rock's excesses. Lyrics
range from gossamer-veiled double-entendres ("Let me buy you a lollipop you
want to lick," from "Paper Doll") to exuberant leers ("I want all the
self-conscious girls who try to hide who they are with makeup/You know it's
the girl in the front with the tight pants I really want to shake up," from
"Finding Out True Love Is Blind"). Funny and rocking, Louis XIV should keep
you satisfied until Charlemagne and Charles de Gaulle record their
debuts.
