Album Reviews
The Lords love living on the edge. The Belgian band has spent five albums and a decade-plus refining its churning, burning mix of throbbing grooves, lusty lyrics and bawdy atheism (the liner notes to Farstucker exhort us to "Spank the Lord!"). If it weren't for the Lords' wry humor and deft musical touch, it would all play like a bunch of sensationalist hooey. As it is, lurid elements aside, these tracks are still arousing. From house-y dance grinds to subtler numbers and ambient interludes, the Lords massage their music into provocative -- even thought-provoking -- compositions. "Lick My Chakra" combines chanting Tibetan monks with orgasmic moaning for a sly sonic scenario depicting tantric sex, while "Kiss Eternal" is a haunting vampire tale that dwells on the murky ground where sex, death, desire and hunger meet. The Lords unleash lots of below the belt action, but Farstucker demonstrates there's plenty going on in their heads as well. (SANDY MASUO)
