Album Reviews
The Lo-Fidelity Allstars are six Brits bearing tag names like Wrekked Trainand the Albino Priest who combine rock, hip-hop and house into a big-beatpudding. The mix-though it sounds a bit prefab-works infuriatingly well, from the nasal guitars wallowing in a murky beat swamp in "I Used to Fall inLove" to the Staxicized "Lazer Sheep Dip Funk." The Lo-Fi Allstars may beshameless, but they sling their samples and inspirations around like soul-bredsous-chefs. There's even enough residual trippiness to keep the club kidshappy-the stoned drone of "Kasparov's Revenge" tips its hat to trancepioneers Spacemen 3. It adds up to the catchiest thing to come out of thepost-everything dance scene since Fatboy Slim's Better Living ThroughChemistry. (RS 805)
