Album Reviews
On mix tapes alongside his mentor 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks was a charmer, quick to spin hood tragedy into narrative gold, and to win a female's attention with witty insights into the intractable gender wars. So on this G Unit member's solo debut, don't mistake his monotone flow for flatness. Banks finds levity in odd places: "You ain't gotta practice gymnastics to catch a body," he muses on "Work Magic." "Warrior" is chest-thumping bluster nonpareil, and "On Fire" is deliriously addictive. The production here is grimy and chaotic ("Playboy") and heavy on the dissonant keys so beloved by Queens thugs ("If You So Gangsta," "Til the End"). But it's never as weighty as Banks himself, who raps each verse as if his entire career depends on it.
