The band's top spot debut was expected, since Live's last release, "Throwing Copper," has been certified six-times platinum, its new single is currently No. 1 on modern rock radio. (No. 2 on rock radio), and a recent appearance on "Saturday Night Live" helped spread the word about "Secret Samadhi."
Live's arrival breaks up a history-making, albeit brief, all women top ten. Loaded with albums by LeAnn Rimes ("Unchained Melody" and "Blue"), Erykah Badu, No Doubt, Jewel, Toni Braxton, The Spice Girls, Celine Dion, and soundtracks prominently featuring female performers ("Evita" and "Romeo and Juliet"), the ladies-first line-up probably won't happen again for some time.
Other top ten debuts this week include the soundtrack to David Lynch's "Lost Highway," featuring the Nine Inch Nails hit single "The Perfect Drug," and "Tru 2 Da Game" from hardcore New Orleans hip hop act Tru.
From the top, it was Live's "Secret Samadhi" (227,000 copies sold); LeAnn Rimes' "Unchained Melody" (137,000); Erykah Badu's "Baduizm" (112,000); No Doubt's "Tragic Kingdom" (108,000); "Spice Girls" (105,000); Jewel's "Pieces of You" (95,000); "Lost Highway" (94,000); "Tru 2 Da Game" (85,000); Toni Braxton's "Secrets" (82,000); and Celine Dion's "Falling Into You" (81,000).
On the singles sales side, it's still a Spice Girls kind of world. Their international hit remains at No. 1 States-side, selling 173,000 copies for the week, followed by: Puff Daddy's "Can't Nobody Hold Me Down" (166,000); Dru Hill's "In My Bed" (88,000); Toni Braxton's "Unbreak My Heart" (77,000); R. Kelly's "I Believe
