Album Reviews

Lisa Marie Presley lacks serious pipes, but the daughter of the King does possess the instincts of a serious artist, one who appears reluctant to exploit her celebrity with crass product just because she can. The question is whether that will be enough: Whereas 2003's debut, To Whom It May Concern, charted largely on good will and curiosity, Now What is an honorable near miss. None of it sounds better than capable, not even co-songwriter Linda Perry's six contributions, although those tracks do possess the best melodies. Steve Jones' instantly recognizable Sex Pistols guitar riffs rescue "Idiot," but the rest of Now What errs on the atmospheric, indistinct side. Covers of the Ramones' "Here Today, Gone Tomorrow" and Don Henley's ever-timely "Dirty Laundry" only prove that Presley needs catchier, more succinct material.
