Fleetwood Mac mastermind Lindsey Buckingham's fourth solo album came out on his fifty-eighth birthday, and he gave himself a hell of a present. With its skewed pop melodies, home-brewed sonic trickery and blazing fingerpicking, Under the Skin is a mesmerizing return to the side of Buckingham that birthed the proto-indie-pop strangeness of 1979's Tusk. Through most of the album, he achieves maximum effect from minimal arrangements, from the Smile-like carnival of vocal harmonies that enliven "It Was You" to the clicking hand percussion and trippy echo effects of "Show You How." Only one song, the rootsy "Down on Rodeo," gets more expansive production -- and it deserves it, thanks to a gorgeous, sun-splashed chorus that sounds like a lost Fleetwood Mac hit.

On first listen I thought, My God! what have I bought? I read all the press reviews about this new album and how great it was and being a fan I took the risk and got without listening first. But...... after numerous listens I now love the album. It's a real grower but I can understand long time Mac fans being disappointed as it is not a commercial/poppy cd by any means.

Lindsay plays most of the instruments and his finger picking guitar work is absolutely outstanding, particularly on the opening track.

The songs are complex, yet simple with overlays of different sounds you pick up after each listen. Lindsay's vocals often sound husky and whispery and difficult to hear without reference to the lyrics printed on the sleeve.

It's an interesting album, not what I was expecting. But I'm glad I purchased it as I've ben a long time fan of his Mac work and solo efforts. He's just a maestro musician. Take the plunge, buy it and let it was over you time and time again - you'll be pleased with the outcome.

Oh my, Lindsey, I can't take it. You're the guy who made Fleetwood Mac with the way you played guitar and produced/arranged everything Stevie did - and your live version of "I'm So Afraid" or even live "Big Love" showed who the brains behind Fleetwood Mac really was...but sadly, every solo effort has one good song, "Think I'm in Trouble" from Law and Order; "Go Insane" from Go Insane; "You Do or You Don't" from Out of the Cradle. But this album doesn't even have one song I can get behind; why do I keep buying your Albums Lindsey??? Wishful thinking I guess.

Forget the words.. Well, I really don't mean that but.. This guy has long been one of the greatest guitar instrumentalist of his time..
Forget the picks.. This guy has the right hand moving way faster than the left.. It's just so unfortunate that this music won't really be heard.. That sucks because at 58.. Man.. this guy has so much left.. I guess it's like Beck, so many years his junior and without much of an audience anymore.. Things just don't make sense in the music world to me anymore....

This album wasn't what I expected. Is it good? Yes. Pleasant melody and a nice Fleetwood-Macish sound pervade here. Yet, somehow, there was something missing. Perhaps this is just a big Fleetwood Mac fan expecting too much. More than worth your time regardless, Buckingham still has a pleasant sound that is present in abundance here.
