Speak  Hear it Now

"I wanna come first," coos the breakout tabloid star of 2004 three minutes into her debut LP. With that as a launching point, Speak shuffles between drab adult pop and rock-disco mush befitting Lohan's party-girl-next-door image. Lohan can work up a nice throaty wail, but in the end Speak isn't more than a mannered cash-in; did it really take seven songwriters and four producers to make one lousy track ("Disconnected")?

1.First:5 Stars- One Of the strongest tracks on the album. Very catchy, great instrumental.
2.Nobody Til' You:3 Stars- Sort of a filler track. Deep lyrics, but does not really stick out to me.
3.Symptoms Of You:4 Stars- Very sweet, expressive song about what it feels like to have a crush on someone. Very corny rhyming, though.
4.Speak:5 Stars- Very good track. Has a very dancey, techno feel. A unique blend of dance pop and rock. Is about being honest in a relationship.
5.Over:5 Stars- Although it has slightly confusing lyrics, its' one of the best tracks on the album. Vocally, Lohan shines the most here!
6.Something I Never Had:5 Stars- Very, very beautiful. I can feel the emotion in her voice. Is about trying to get over someone you feel for, but you never had them in the first place, and probably never will.
7.Anything But Me:4 Stars- Great song showing that just because she's a star, does NOT mean her life is perfect.
8.Disconnected:4 Stars- At first made no sense, but I learned this song is about being glad you're out of a bad relationship, but at the same time feeling very lonely.
9.To Know Your Name:5 Stars- A song about how all the tabloids want to know everything about anyone who dates Lohan. She's letting someone know if they are with her, she won't let out the details.
10.Very Last Moment In Time:4 Stars- A song about loving someone like there's no tomorrow.
11.Magnet:5 Stars- A song about an extreme attraction to someone, and not knowing how to handle it.
12.Rumors:5 Stars- BEST TRACK ON THE ALBUM! Has everything a song should have: Catchy beat and rythm, lyrical meaning, emotion, and a good message.
TOTAL STARS: 4.5 Rounded Up To: 5

another lousy disney channel star, weak songwriting, no original ideas.
if the same album had come from a different artist, not from a film personality.
the music stores a radio would have dump it in a week

Shockingly, Lindsay Lohan's debut album Speak is a good listen. Her Top 10 debut single "Rumors" blew up on the charts and deservedly so--this Hip Hop-infused track snarls just as much as its singer does. Lohan's a surprisingly better singer than one would think, much better than her peer Hilary Duff who often sounds so overprocessed her true sound is lost in the mixing. The opener doesn't justify how good the rest of the record is, but get past that bland first song and the remainder just sounds so smooth and refreshing (for dance pop, that is) it's hard not to like Lindsay even more. Highlights are "Nobody 'Til You," "Symptoms," "Over," "Disconnected," "Very Last Moment in Time" and "Rumors."
