Lil' Romeo, the eleven-year-old son of No Limit honcho Master P., threatened to cut Lil Bow Wow's kiddie-rap reign short recently with an exuberant revamp of the Jackson 5's "I Want You Back." Like the single, Lil' Romeo is all Cracker Jack-sweet rhymes and familiar hooks. Romeo's production squad shows a couple of original touches - the catchy patty-cake jam "Remember" stands out - but mostly they borrow from sure-shot favorites like Slick Rick's "Teenage Love" and even the "Angel of the Morning" cut that Shaggy just used. Young heartthrob Romeo offers puppy-love yelps, nursery-rhyme twists and hollers for the junior hotties. But even if he is ready to dominate lunchroom freestyle sessions, Lil' Romeo sounds like something Master P. threw together between designing his clothing collection and marketing his wireless phone service. If nothing else, it'll give the fourth-grade girls something to double-dutch to this summer.
