Album Reviews
Soulful isn't the first word that springs to mind when you think of a couple of Austrian dudes making electronic music. But Viennese producers Peter Kruder and Richard Dorfmeister construct warm, meditative soundscapes that lower the blood pressure and seep into the bones. This substantial two-CD set is a collection of remixes, but K and D take little besides inspiration from the original songs, which range from Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's "1st of tha Month" to Alex Reece's "Jazz Master." Instead, the duo's own soothing fusion of drum-and-bass, hip-hop and ambient sound saturates each track, evoking the floaty heaviness of a high-grade sedative: Deep, down-tempo beats slump into sofa cushions, while spacey, ethereal melodies hover among the stars.
