Album Reviews
Kinky belong to a new generation of Latin rockers who are having a hard time moving the genre forward. The Mexican quintet's second disc reiterates the quirky humor and tight electrojams that turned Kinky into critical darlings, with the band's lounge-y leanings given ample airing. The Latin element is kept to a minimum -- a timbales solo here, a half-assed cumbia beat there -- and vocalist Gil Cerezo sounds positively goofy whenever he transposes his nonsensical lyrics into English. Fortunately, Cake frontman John McCrea lends a hand on the moody spoken-word jam "The Headphonist." Kinky's stylish, easygoing concoctions offer a pleasant diversion, but they are too lightweight to match the creative ambition of the better Latin bands out there.
