On their vibrant debut LP, the six-man hip-hop outfit Jurassic 5 -- MCs Chali 2NA, Zaakir, Akil and Marc 7, and DJs Cut Chemist and Nu-Mark -- breathe new life into old-school hip-hop. Dusty samples abound, thumping drums burrow deep, and the rappers chant in unison with barbershop-quartetlike precision. But J5 are not some nostalgic novelty act -- they're the big cats of the set-to-blow-up West Coast underground, a place where innovation is key. Cut and Nu-Mark, who produce most of the tracks, take ill beats mined from the deepest of crates and tweak them into dirty-funk masterpieces. Between the all-important singalong hooks, each lyricist rips through rhymes with bull's-eye accuracy and a distinctive flow, from Chali's baritone smoothness to Zaakir's cocky snap. The lyrics are down-to-earth and positive -- almost wholesome -- but Quality Control's overall vibe is uncompromisingly intense and hard to resist. (RS 843)
