Album Reviews
Last year, a little-known Dutch DJ named Tom Holkenburg (a.k.a. Junkie XL) pumped up the drums on an old Elvis Presley tune, "A Little Less Conversation," and scored a worldwide Number One hit. On his third album, a double-CD set, Holkenburg tries to re-create that magic moment, inviting eleven of his favorite singers to get infused with his retro Big Beat style. Chuck D and the Specials' Terry Hall sound way out of place here, but Robert Smith evokes the Cure's best days on the eerie, synth-laden "Perfect Blue Sky." On the second CD, 3am, Holkenburg pretty much ditches the guest stars and delivers a seamless seventy-three minutes of pure break beats and chill-out comfort.
