By far not Joni Mitchell's finest work, Song to a Seagull still has the ability to transform most people into Joni fans, just as it did when released.

Sonically, this is one of her stablest albums, with each performance flowing seamlessly out of the previous, and seamlessly into the next. "I Had a King," "Cactus Tree," and "Song to a Seagull" rank among some of the finest moments Mitchell has ever put on record, if songs like "The Dawntreader" and "Sisotowbell Lane" come across a bit too tongue-in-cheek to work.

Despite it's small shortcomings, Mitchell's debut hage aged extremely well, and is as pleasing and satisfying a listen as it was more than 30 years ago. It's not stunning, but it doesn't really matter- hearing her voice and guitar you much prefer her as this young, naive, and impressionable Maid of Lorraine.

One of a small number of albums I must listen to start to finish. My basis for determining whether the song I'm working on is melodically complete or not was, to a large extent, formed while memorizing the songs on this record. As many of the songs here are downbeat, reflective pieces this may not be the record you want to listen to first thing in the morning.
