This 11-song record might be seen as a sequel to the debut, the original Seal. Both were produced by Trevor Horn, former Revolutionaries Wendy and Lisa reprise their sidekick roles, and Seal the strapping half-Nigerian, half-Brazilian Londoner continues his bohemian rhapsody.
Simultaneously wide-eyed and skeptical, Seal's themes run from love (physical, metaphysical and "unconditioned," as he calls it on "Bring It On") to the evolution of identity and back again. He doesn't tell stories, exactly; he paints moody, emotionally raw images that could if they weren't occasionally anchored by solid detail (whether the "turning to the needle" in "Dreaming in Metaphors" or the plush acoustic guitar that opens "Prayer for the Dying") evaporate like water on Arizona asphalt.
The marked difference (other than backing vocals by Joni Mitchell on "If I Could" and Seal's shiny bald head) is in his voice. It's lower, stronger, more resonant. Mixing with expansive, sometimes orchestral music, it gives sentient weight to tossed-off thoughts like "Life's confusing, but I don't know why" ("People Asking Why"). His voice soulful, raspy, a little dark can make even the maudlin seductive.

Your Turn

Karle writes:
Seal is a artist that likes to make music that sounds good all the time. Having a concept of music like this can be disastrous when you sound the same on every track. this is probably the only weakness of Seal2 it sounds good all the time. i would hardly count his against the cd for although he sounds the same on most tracks with his soaring vocals going for a punch, the contnt of the lyrics is what gives them weight. " there used to be a greying tower alone on the sea' from Kiss from a rose. it is visualizes pain and heartfelt emotions. the wording of these songs is the strong point of this cd. 'Prayer for the dying' 'dreaming in metaphors' 'Fast changes' 'People asking why'. when you are a good song writer and writing the song that is to come after kiss from a rose will have to be very different in musical terms or it will be overshadowed by a hit single like this. It affects so many pop stars due to their inablity to stretch themselves further than their no. 1's. This is another strengh of seal 2. Even though kiss from a rose was the number 1 hit it appears and is listened to but it does not encourage much replay because of the strengh of the other tracks. This is always a relief to any listenener and it will land you at the grammys. Seal has a clear message of upliftment on this cd and it is admirable despite the rolling stone reviewer referring to certain lyrics as maudlin which is not exactly the case for people genuinely have these kind of these sentiments. never pick out one line of a song and tear it to shreds if you dont take into account the song as a whole. my only problem with seal is that he wishes to go for that killer punch by blasting his voice so hard trying to reach out to you and it does work on tracks like 'Kiss from a rose' 'Dont cry' Fast changes'or 'Peole asking why' but bombs on tracks like 'Dreaming in metaphors' where it wasnt necessary or 'im Alive' it is very obvious that he has a good voice. many people have a good voice dont overdo it. I have always acknowledged that quality when he is singing 'money' then kicks into high gear for 'You are not alone'. Seal needs to take a lesson and listen to 'Dangerous' or History' by Michael Jackson or he will run the risk of being a dance club artist. This album is heartfelt and so it so it succeeds especially when one considers the reprise of bring it on. However just buying system confirmed my fears. he sounds the same as he does in 1994 despite the messages he brings which are beginning to sound the same. After this Cd or human nature where he becomes more cynical which is appealing you might not need another seal cd. no offense seal. listen to michael jackson and you will understand why he has sold over 200 million and you are barely scraping 30.
