For the past decade, R&B has tried to be as extravagant as the hip-hop that usurped its place. Kanye West protege Legend has more modest aims. His brand of soul is mannered, even elegant. And he's got range: Two luscious odes to infidelity -- "She Don't Have to Know" and "Number One" -- are followed by an equally convincing promise to not stray, "I Can Change." Best of all, "Used to Love U" bears West's self-doubting stamp: "Maybe, baby/Puffy, Jay-Z would all be better for you/'Cause all I could do is love you."

TRL,winter 2004.A Chicago fresh face named Kanye West is performing "All Falls Down" with Syleena Johnson in tow.In the background,a young, content pianist suprisingly offers a grounded, partially Jeffery Osbourne-esque baritone to the song's chorus. This man happens to be an experienced gospel-turned-r&b prodigy named John Legend. As soon as Kanye set out an establishment for himself in the rap game,he also established a record imprint with Legend a part of the team.So then,he and this wunderkind spawned one of the most flourishing, exellent r&b albums ever,"Get Lifted".Refreshing forty-five minutes of love, loyalty, and seeing the light-much like a baptism."Used To Love U" is a heart-to-heart number where John can't connect the dots to his mate's lack of devotion. It's all said and done when he gives up all the drama at the song's end(backed by his extensive gospel vocals)."She Don't Have To Know" is a smooth track where Mr. Legend and his girl disguise a relationship from a puzzled boyfriend."Number One",with its Staple Singers sample, dazzles during the mid-selection of songs on the album."Ordinary People" is a tempting ballad which John testifies the true meanings of true love and forgiveness. It's not usually a ballad where the crooner's singing is as long as the song,it's just a man and his piano rationalizing his thoughts and melodies. On the last track,"Live It Up",Legend and his mate tend to celebrate all their everlasting success and happiness through and through. You may picture the couple popping champagne in a brand new Convertible they just won to Miri Ben-Ari's heavenly violin touches.John Legend is one to continue his longevity along this spiritual train he's conducted.Wanna come along for the ride?
