On 2004's Get Lifted John Legend stood out from the R&B pack -- and scored a Best New Artist Grammy -- with a piano-driven throwback sound and an all-star lineup of collaborators that included Kanye West and Will.i.am. Legend's famous friends are back for the bigger, better follow-up, which blends lush, elegant band arrangements with stylish synth parts and cool samples (including one of Hendrix backing Lonnie Youngblood). Over thirteen tracks, Legend ranges from strummy rock ballads (the excellent "Show Me") to McCartney-style love songs ("Where Did My Baby Go") and Temptations-channeling R&B ("Slow Dance"). Often the tunes take surprising, oddball turns -- near the end of the sprightly first single, "Save Room," a dark organ freakout emerges for a few measures before quickly disappearing. Too quickly, actually: Those moments leave you wishing Legend had indulged his weirder instincts a little more. But it's possible Legend is just too polite -- even the awesomely titled "P.D.A. (We Just Don't Care)" turns out to be a crooned ballad, complete with Vince Guaraldi-esque piano, that wouldn't sound out of place in a Nora Ephron movie.

It's hard for me to pick a favorite song from this CD! So many are worth a listen. "Once Again" I think is 10 steps above his first(Get Lifte,) though (Lifted) was by no means a fluke. I avoided this CD for a year thinking it would....well.....suck! How wrong I was! The songs: "Show Me" and "Slow Dance" are the standout within this standout CD. To be honest- it took a 2nd- even a third listen for me to realize just how good this CD is. (Once Again) John Legend is 2 steps ahead of the pack!

"Once Again" is not "Get Lifted." Not a single track from "Once Again" has the flavor of "Get Lifted" except for possibly "Stereo" which could possibly squeeze Snoop Verse in its second half a la "I Can Change" (Get Lifted.) "Once Again" is a grown up album from a growing musician. Legend has the precision of a seasoned musician with the creativity of an emerging hit-hunter. The most intriguing aspect of "Once Again" is its willingness to go against the norm of the overproduced candy that is Pop. Sure Legend is R&B but he can compete with Pop audiences, with Rock audiences, etc. "Heaven" is a sweet track- a mixture of old school and new school- and a magic mixture of vocal creativity/phrasing and well developed rhythms. The stand out track on the album is "Coming Home." It's the kind of track you skip over the first time, the second time, maybe even the third... and then you discover it; rather it discovers you. A well crafted timeless hit. The song hits home for our generation, are country, and our hearts. Learn the lyrics, sing along, and take the ride that is "Once Again."

John Once Again proves why he's going to be a LEGEND. I wasn't convinced when I first heard Once Again, mainly due to my expectations based on Get Lifted. Once Again is not a second installation of Get Lifted, it is just as new and fresh as if Legend were a brand new artist. A completely different album giving music a refreshing sound for today. John blends good old soul music with his own style to create wonderful songs such as "Each Day Gets Better", "Slow Dance" and "Where Did My Baby Go", to name a few. You still get a Get Lifted feel with songs like "Stereo", "Again" and "Another Again". Of course John takes you to his Gospel roots with "Heaven" and "Show Me". This album has something for everyone, if you go in with an open mind you will come out with a musical experience you won't soon forget.

This is a really nice album. This is possibly the closest that I have seen in contemporary R&B that anyone has come to capturing the sound of old classics.

My only complaint about the album is that it is a bit too loungy. The loungyness of the album almost relaxes you too much. It also doesn't have that one knockout 5 star type of track (like ordinary people). But there really aren't any bad songs on it. The only song I didn't like too much was "Stereo," (3 star song) which is not horrible but is probably the worst song on the album. Everything else is pretty much 4 stars to 4 1/2.

John is immensely talented and you kind of get the feeling listening to his records that he hasn't tapped into his full potential. He definitely has a classic or several classic albums in him.

i love this album...its so comtemporary yet old school...i love how decided to take a huge change a break out of the typical r & B that we listen to on the radio and he did it so well...i don't think loving this album has anything to do with age but with the love of music...one of the best if not the best album of the year

Once Again was innovative and a pleasure to listen too. His music continues to speak to me. He is a great story teller, and the situations he speaks of are realistic. One can empathize with his art. A breath of fresh air in our time!
