Mellencamp, Fogerty Unite

Veteran rockers bring the hits, and the kids, on the road

"I'd like to play 'Green River' and 'Run Through the Jungle,'" says John Mellencamp about sitting in with his summer roadmate, John Fogerty. "That will be cool," says Fogerty.

The two veteran rockers' thirty-seven-date summer tour, which kicks off this Friday in Cincinnati, will be a greatest-hits bonanza. And you can expect some great chemistry, as the two have history: In 1985, Mellencamp lent Fogerty his band for Farm Aid, and last year they crossed paths on the Vote for Change Tour.

Mellencamp, whose stage will be illuminated solely by old movie lights and spotlights, says, "We're doing better business this time on arena shows than we did fifteen years ago."

It will also be a family affair for both artists: When Fogerty's sons aren't at skateboard camp, they'll be out with Dad. And Mellencamp's eleven-year-old, Hud, will earn $200 a week as a roadie.

"He came out with us for a month this year," says Mellencamp. "I was so f-ing proud of him." A chip off the old block? "I always say to him, 'Hud, are you going to use your good looks to be a better person, or are you going to waste it on wine, women and song?' He says, 'The latter.'"
