John Fogerty's first album of new songs since he resolved his long emotional and legal war with his past in Creedence Clearwater Revival is essentially history repeated, and not just in the no-frills drive and corroded-treble guitar breaks. Fogerty wrote his greatest Creedence hits about a broken America polarized by income, war and moral arrogance, and the bad news here is that most changes have been for the worse. "Don't You Wish It Was True" rolls along like "Proud Mary," with an undertow of frustration. "Long Dark Night" and "I Can't Take It No More" are enraged, direct hits on the reigning fortunate son. But Fogerty's documentary roots rock was always rebel music, a counterculture of factory-floor politics via Hank Williams and Dale Hawkins. Revival is no rerun. It is Fogerty getting back to work -- and finally acting on his own advice, in a song he's actually named after his old band: "You can't go wrong if you play a little bit of that Creedence song."

This album is classic rock in the best sense of the word. It seems to have all of the elements that made both the Creedence albums and his solo work so visceral and worthy. It's nice to hear a work that shows rock music doesn't have to be overly technical or trendy to be vital. JF remains as significant as the most hyped rapper or techno whiz kid on the scene today. And the fact he rips George W's head off and shits down his neck is just icing on the cake. Rock on!

With a great album, I typically go through a process of crowning a new favorite song every couple of days. The current champion on John Fogerty's Revival is "Natural Thing" - having already gone through repetitions of "River Is Waiting" and "Long Dark Night" that would've proven embarassingly obsessive had I suddenly discovered there'd been hidden surveillance equipment in my car over the last week. These songs are incredible, and there's plenty to like about 8 of the 9 others as well (Sorry, "I Can't Take It No More." You feel like an unfinished studio jam, and politically redundant following "Long Dark Night." But no harm done, especially at only 1 minute and 39 seconds). But back to the praise: This may be Fogerty's greatest solo effort. And that's saying a lot. In essence, it's all about the craftsmanship. As fully heard here, the man simply has a gift for writing and performing fantastic rock songs. The players sound flawless, there's freshness throughout, and most of all, Fogerty's unmistakable voice is in full bloom. All this leads to two questions: Is he cryogenically frozen after each album as to never age? And why does this amazing artist not get the full appreciation he deserves? Maybe it's not possible.

A breath of fresh air from a voice we have missed! Nice and rootsy, the way JF is supposed to be. I didn't exactly mind the "Rock and Roll Girl" era - but mostly because it's just nice to hear this guy sing and play. But here we have an entire album of material that is really worth listening to!
No pretension, some good (and unfortunately true) politicizing, nice gritty guitar work, and a great band!
Thanks, Man!

I don't understand how David Fricke seems to like Revival very much but is afraid of giving it a high rating. A great album is a great album and that is that.

No, Revival is not innovative, but that has nothing to do with the quality of the music. On Revival John Fogerty is at his roots and has created a truly magic blend of country, blues and rock 'n' roll. On Revival there is also a great gospel and soul flavored song, 'River is waiting', on which Fogerty's voice sounds better than it has sounded since the 1970's.

Other highlights include the opening track, 'Don't you wish it was true', which is guaranteed to make you feel good, the country rocking Gunslinger and the political Long Dark Night, on which Fogerty plays the harmonica for the first time on an album since his 1975 self titled LP.

The first six songs are slightly better than the "B side", but there are no weak songs found anywhere on Revival. Great guitar playing is all around the album and it rocks a good bit harder than it's predecessor, Deja Vu All Over Again.

Revival is definitely the best album John Fogerty has made since Creedence's Cosmo's Factory (1970). Now Fogerty is back for real, and Revival definitely deserves a five star rating.
