Album Reviews
"EXP" is Hendrix's white tornado advertisement aperitif (come-on), "my God Martha, it's a white tornado": "There ain't no life nowhere." The science fiction continues (Mose Allison) in "Up from the Skies," while "Spanish Castle Magic" transforms the Clovers; in fact, much of Axis demonstrates that Hendrix stands in relation to rhythm and blues of the fifties as the Who stand in relation to mainstream rock of the fifties–two useful transplants, indeed. "Ain't No Telling" is all Mitch Mitchell, who is by now definitely one of rock's most frantic drummers (from Moon to Baker). "If 6 Was 9" cracks foundations with banalized hippie lore ("wave my freak flag high"), while "She's So Fine" positively destroys walls. If "One Rainy Wish" repairs everything (like "May This Be Love"), pomp and circumstance ushers out "Bold as Love"–we all know that she by now has to be experienced.
Jimi Hendrix may be the Charlie Mingus of Rock, especially considering his fondness for reciting what might loosely be called poetry. But his songs too often are basically a bore, and the Experience also shares with Cream the problem of vocal ability. Fortunately both groups' instrumental excellence generally saves the day, and Hendrix on Axis demonstrates conclusively that he is one of rock's greatest guitar players in his mastery and exploration of every conceivable gimmick. Uneven in quality as it is, Axis nevertheless is the finest Voodoo album that any rock group has produced to date.

I've been a Hendrix freak since the beginning and am the proud owner of 33 albums. Not bad considering he released 4 while still with us. Iv'e always maintained that, eventually, he will be compared to Bach, Beetoven, etc. Always tried to understand his mind set as well as his music. It's a tragedy that the record companies would not give him "artistic license" which ultimately led to his downfall. They insisted on another Purple Haze, Hey Joe, etc. This led to great depression, stress and so on. His ultimate goal was to conduct a rock n roll orchestra which would be the only way he could make his unbelievable studio magic into live performances. It never ceases to amaze me at not just his guitar prowess but his mixing in the studio. I venture to say that he influenced more people with his studio work than with his guitar. Frank Zappa credited Jimi with arousing his mind as to what he could do studio-wise as well as live performances. Forty years and counting and people still can not truly understand this giant of a man. He is absolutely a great American composer and nothing less.

Just thinking about the title track gives me chills. This has to be the most underrated album of Hendrix's catalogue.

my friends, if u have never listened to this album, you must, right now, go to the nearest cd store and buy it. Hendrix is god, and this album proves it even more than his other two albms. Something about axis makes it so mystical and dreamy, and u can't help but love it. Pretty much every song on the albm is different and equally great. "exp" is great for a good trip. "up from the skies" relaxes the mind body and soul. "spanish castle magic" wakes that soul right back up and takes you for a ride to a castle in spain on a dragonfly. "wait until tomorrow" tells the story of two young lovers planning to run away together, while keeping the beat and sound at such a great level. "aint no telling" is put in the perfect spot on this album, to give u a sense of reality before the next song takes you away to ur fantasyland once again. "little wing",possibly, and in my opinion, the best song Jimi Hendrix ever did, takes u to ur own little special place as u picture a woman walking through the clouds up to ur cloud where u tiredly sit. "if 6 was 9" is a great political movement song with a strong message:"im the one who's gotta die when its time for me to die, so let me live my life the way i want to". "You got me floatin" tells of the story about a girl who would get him high naturally. "castles made of sand" takes you on a fantastic soothing artistic journey through three different stories in one song. It is an amazing song. "shes so fine" proves that Mitch and noel have voiceboxes as well. "one rainy wish" is yet another of hendrix's soothing songs which takes u on a dreamy ride. "little miss lover" is a jam session song right before the grand finale. "bold as love" is a beautifully made song. It reminds me of a colorful painted picture being painted while the song continues throughout. If u haven't noticed yet, im in love with this album. You MUST listen to this cd before you die. No go, live the magic of axis:bold as love before its too late.
