When it comes to emotional baggage, twenty-eight-year-old Welsh singer-songwriter Jem travels light. Offering sunny pep talks over Dido-style tracks, she moves against the grain of alt-folk's melancholic reputation. A former law student and drum-and-bass promoter, Jem is blessed not only with reedy pipes to rival Beth Orton's but also a sense of sonic humor: She matter-of-factly emotes over songs flecked with everything from dub to medieval choirs. And the candy-girl lilt of "Wish I" and tambourine shakes on "Just a Ride" please, then evaporate like the outdoor-cafe flirtations they're meant to be.
