Album Reviews
He's recently grinned his way through an increase-the-peace summit with Louis Farrakhan, and, in his liner notes, he shouts out to "all the black leaders." But peace isn't the prize Ja Rule has got his eye on. His fifth album, Blood in My Eye, has the hastily thrown-together feel of a street mix tape -- posse cuts and skits abound over mere sketches of beats. On tracks such as "Clap Back" and "The Crown," the vitriol he aims at his foes 50 Cent, Eminem and Dr. Dre is unchecked and raw. To shore up his street cred, Ja insistently invokes the memory of Tupac, whether by featuring Hussein Fatal (of Pac's Outlawz crew) or, on the title track, suggesting that the late rapper told him that Dr. Dre was gay. As refreshing as it is to hear Ja do something besides the singing approximation he's been practicing the past few years, the boasts here feel utterly tired. And so does the attitude.
