Mudvayne at Full Speed

Metal men play live and online

Mudvayne are busy at play this spring. Before they rock Orlando on Wednesday, the metal men will compete against fans online in Need for Speed Underground 2 -- which features their song "Determined" -- as part of Xbox Live's "Game With Fame." The interactive program will match 100 contest winners against the Illinois rockers in some all-out street racing. To practice, the band's breaking out . . . Tiger Woods.

"Greg's a pretty big gamer with Tiger Woods Golf," frontman Chad Gray says of guitarist Greg Tribbett. "I've got the long drive, but he's got a good short game."

Gaming skills aside, Gray says the band is more excited about the interaction with fans. "It's a lot better than a meet-and-greet where you sign stuff, shake a hand and say, 'Thanks for stopping by,'" he says. "It's an interesting medium to get some bro downtime with our fans, because we consider them our friends and family. We can actually talk to them on headsets while we're playing."

Mudvayne have gotten quite a bit of face time with fans recently after kicking off a tour in support of their new album, Lost and Found, which combines the raw grit and swirling atmospherics of the band's first two records. The first single among the new twelve tracks, "Happy," hit radio last month.

"From a sonic standpoint, there's just phenomenal clarity on the album," Gray says. "There's a little bit of ear candy and some atmosphere, but there are really solid tones. We felt like we were writing better than we ever had."

Following the tour, Mudvayne will join this summer's Ozzfest, taking the main stage before metal gods Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath. "It's like heavy-metal summer camp," Gray says. "You've got the trailer court with all the buses, and everybody's just hanging out, grilling, drinking and sharing. There's a lot of respect, and I think it's going to be exciting."

Gray is less optimistic about his chances against the fans on Wednesday. "I'm sure I'm gonna get smoked," he says. "I had Atari 2600 and eventually the 5200 and it was like, 'These graphics are amazing!' Now it's like, 'What?' I told Greg, 'Dude, we really need to get that game and start practicing.'"
