At least it appears that way as the Indigo Girls launch yet another all-female package tour this summer. While the Lilith Fair inherited a little more testosterone this year with the addition of bands like the Cowboy Junkies, Morcheeba and K's Choice, the Indigo Girls have returned to the die-hard feminine ethic that caused a stir last year for Sarah McLachlan and company.
Starting Aug. 19 -- less than one month after their last Lilith date -- the Indigo Girls will descend upon the State Theater in Portland, Maine with an ensemble of well-respected musicians called the "Suffragette Session Tour." Joining Amy Ray and Emily Saliers in this unconventional troupe will be the multi-instrumentalist Lisa Germano, who was slated to perform with the Smashing Pumpkins this summer, but recently backed out. In addition, Kate Schellenbach will take a reprieve from her recording sessions with Luscious Jackson in New York for the 12-date tour of large clubs and small theaters.
In addition, the bill will include Josephine Wiggs of the Breeders and Gail Ann Dorsey, who has worked with David Bowie and Concrete Blonde. Hispanic performer Lourdes Perez, Canadian popper Jane Siberry, indie rocker Thalla Zedek and Jean Smith of Mecca will round out the bill. All of the artists will contribute to a rotating and intermingling array of music during the tour, which will have no set headliner or opener.
"If this teaches a few Conservative-minded people that women can get it done, that's great," Russell Carter, a spokesman for the Indigo Girls told JAMTV on Friday. "There's just a certain solidarity to having an all-female tour."
Though Carter said the bands have no concrete plans to release a "Suffragette Sessions" live disc similar to the Lilith Fair compilation, they will most likely record the concerts just in case.
"This is an experiment," he said. "If it goes well, then we will certainly considering doing it again." (Anni Layne)
