INDIGO GIRLS

Now that the Indigo Girls are a bona fide Top 10 act, selling millions of albums and influencing folk-flavored artisans from Jewel to Ani DiFranco, one might expect their live show to be packed with a little extra punch.

\\Indeed it is, but you won't find it in the staging, which is as plain as an amphitheater tour can be. Nor will you find Indigo Girls Amy Ray and Emily Saliers decked out in evening gowns or exotic costumes. Instead, their pizzazz is right where it should be -- in the music. Call it upgraded Indigo, a sound that includes a fuller mix and layers of strings from mandolins, banjos, violins and anything else that can be strummed or picked.

\\But the real added punch was pure emotion that resonated with the crowd so much that concert-goers were openly crying for one song and dancing with wild abandon to the next. Even those converted by the group's recent mainstream success got caught up in the raw feeling, and the band itself seemed to bounce off the odd and introspective dynamic.

\\The group has always struck a chord with women both gay and straight, and the audience was about 80 percent female. And while some of the men looked a bit restless, even those dragged there by friends were dancing along by the end of the concert, which opened with "Mystery" and closed with the duo's first hit, "Closer to Fine."

\\Though it's easy to classify as repetitive any act whose style is as highly developed as the Indigo Girls, their performance showcased the variety of genres from which the group borrows. There's a taste of country in songs like "Shame on You," while other tunes evoked Southern roots-rock or Irish folk. The duo even underscored their range of influences with a cover of Bob Dylan's "Tangled up in Blue," on which they were joined by opening act Michelle Malone.
