The Silver Lake indie rockers channel PJ Harvey and Cowboy Junkies on this mopey single from 2004's Future Perfect. "It's kind of sexy, kind of understated," says Boyd, "and it makes me feel good."
. . . And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead: "Wasted State of Mind" [Listen]
Boyd says this cut from the noise rockers' recent So Divided is "Beatles-ish": "It starts off with these weird tabla-sounding Indian drums, and then it moves into this Sgt. Pepper-sounding wonderland."
Kaki King: ". . . Until We Felt Red" [Listen]
Boyd's bass player turned him on to the five-foot female guitar virtuoso from Atlanta, particularly this instrumental title track from her new disc: "Amazing guitar work that is not showy in any way."
Elvis Costello: "(I Don't Want to Go) to Chelsea"
The 1978 hit "has a frantic quality. The guitar riff in the beginning sounds like it's barely holding on."
Feist:"Let It Die" [Listen]
Boyd can't get enough of this solo track from the Broken Social Scene singer: "If the song was a person, it would be the soft-spoken, beautiful, underdressed girl slinking across the room."
