Album Reviews
The Turners have produced a brief, unassuming set designed for stomping. Tina's redoubtable presence and incisive, good-natured songwriting fill the gaps in Ike's skittish production. Her "Nutbush City Limits," a smash in England, "Fancy Annie" and "Club Manhattan" are the appropriately funky basics of this autobiographical focus on the pair's roots. "That's My Purpose" is the high point, despite a crying need for the Ikettes' counterpoint. The remade "River Deep, Mountain High" falls much too short of the original, that anomalous Phil Spector record that still stands as their masterpiece.
