For those who lament the death of glitter, this soundtrack will both fascinate and astound. The album is full of songs that hearken back to the era of glam rock with veterans like Brain Eno and Lou Reed while still providing a modern take by employing bands like Shudder to Think and Placebo.

While the music has its own unique take on glam rock, it still mimics quite unabashedly the stylings of David Bowie and the Velvet Underground among many others. This is not unexpected, however, for the movie is as thinly veiled as cellophane wrap in its inspiration; naturally the music would follow along the same vein.

While the soundtrack is a veritable goldmine of winning music, there are some unfortunate disappointments. Many of the songs in the movie like the haunting “Sebastian”, or the ironic “The Fat Lady of Limbourg” are conspicuously missing. Also, those who may have fallen in love with the version of “The Ballad of Demon Maxwell” sung by Jonathan Rhys-Meyers will find the version on the album played by Shudder to Think lacking in the Brain Slade quality it originally had.

Nevertheless, listening to this album is easy, and one rarely thinks to skip a track. The created band that proves to be the heart of the soundtrack, Venus in Furs, fashions sexy, and glamorous tunes that are altogether enthralling. This is no surprise, however, since the band is comprised of two members of Radiohead (Yorke and Greenwood) and various members from underground bands like Suede and Roxy Music, and fronted by enigmatic Brian Slade himself, Jonathan Rhys-Meyers.

With all of its wonder, and even with its pitfalls, Velvet Goldmine’s soundtrack will not frustrate the avowed glam rocker, and promises to tantalize those of this generation who have not yet had a taste of this eccentric, and coquettish music.

This movie is one of my top 5 movies ever. I can't watch it when my parents are around but i watch it like 4 times a week sometimes even more. I just wish i could dress like how Jonathan Rhys Meyers did as Brian Slade. i freak'en love this movie!
