Have Birkenstocks, will travel. |

Summoning a Deadhead reunion of sorts, the Summer Sun Music Festival will bring Pennsylvania's per capita average of Volkswagen buses, roach clips and Frisbee-toting mutts well above normal this weekend. Boasting large-scale jam bands such as JGB, the Jazz Mandolin Project, Ekoostik Hookah and Gov't Mule, this summer-long traveling carnival has already extinguished camp fires in Michigan and Georgia, and plans to blaze a trail through New York and Illinois before the summer's end.

Conceived as a blissful camping venture, the Summer Sun Music Fest kicked off on May 29 in Val Du Lakes camping ground in Mears, Mich., where Zero was scheduled to play, but heavy rainstorms depleted the area's electricity. Also, after just two of the 12 scheduled weekend festivals, the concert's organizers have announced a Fourth of July fizzle that indefinitely postpones next weekend's shows in Turin, N.Y.

In addition, the funkolicious George Clinton & The P-Funk Allstars have bowed out of a scheduled gig, and Zero does not appear poised for an encore. Regardless, roughly a dozen local acts have signed on to each weekend festival, and those tent poles keep jabbing as tie-dyed Americans pay $30 for perhaps the best concert deal of the summer.
