With all the trendy touches on his third album, lady-killing crooner Ginuwine is aiming for ultramodernity - or maybe taking his eventual obsolescence for granted. On this slow-grinding collection, the singer performs a whole song about the pager lifestyle ("2 Way"), writes a pretty sexy Latin-tinged number ("Show After the Show") and plunges into the R&B battle of the sexes (with "There It Is"). As a showman, performer and personality, Ginuwine's the real thing - he's got that high-but-husky voice and impassioned delivery of an old-school love man, most apparent on such swaying classic-R&B numbers as "Differences" and the over-the-top "How Deep Is Your Love," tempered with the unpoetic vernacular of his lyrics. The requisite bland Diane Warren song ("Superhuman") takes up some unnecessary space. But except for that, and peaking with the terrifically complicated quick-shuffle "That's How I Get Down" - featuring the rapper Ludacris and a witty sample from Midori's lap-dancing anthem "5, 10, 15, 20" - The Life is all naughty, disposable high points.
