Inscrutably great MC'ing from a master storyteller a decade ago, who would have thought that Ghostface Killah would be the Wu-Tang Clan's breakout star? Formerly inscrutable, he's become the crew's most kinetic storyteller, capable of turning a stream of rabid non sequiturs into something approaching improvisational genius. More than any of his previous albums, Pretty Toney hones Ghost's wild style into accessible confections. His imagery is always deliciously ornery -- "Brothers around here stick together like cheap rice," he says on the stark "Kunta Fly Shit" -- and his narrative gift shines. On "Holla" and the entrancing "Save Me Dear," he raps on top of vintage-soul vocals that are just as cracked and tortured as his own. And "Run," featuring decaying horns courtesy of RZA, is a masterpiece, as close to a frenetic jailbreak as a song can possibly be.
