Album Reviews
Interview is Gentle Giant's eighth and least cohesive album. Their last album and tour brought them closer than ever to mass acceptance. But this album is flawed by attempts to maintain integrity and still continue the momentum of success.
The intricate vocals and aversion to standard rhythms that were the group's strong points have become its excesses. The problem is exemplified by lyrics which are often nothing more than sentence fragments:
At the beginning had no direction,
Any other way.
After the fourth one, realization,
Finding our road, the same as if today.
The pace is fast and abrupt to the point of nervousness. Hopefully, their next record will be a live one. The combination of highly structured music and the spirit of their visual presence could be thoroughly gratifying. (RS 218)
