Glitter -- born Paul Gadd on May 8, 1940 -- faces allegations that he sexually molested two young girls between 1975 and 1981. Four of the charges involve a 14-year-old girl allegedly assaulted and sodomized in 1980 and 1981. The remaining charge was leveled by a woman who claims Glitter sexually assaulted her between March 1, 1975 and April 30, 1977 -- when she was between the ages of 8 and 10 --according to a BBC News report.
The one-hit wonder was previously arrested in London last November, when employees at a PC World computer store in Bristol, England reportedly found child pornography images on Glitter's personal computer while repairing it. The flashy, outlandish singer was subsequently charged with 50 counts of taking indecent photographs of juveniles. The BBC reports that Glitter also faces 50 additional charges for possessing the obscene images.
Glitter met with police on Tuesday and is scheduled to appear in a North Bristol court on May 18. Glitter's lawyer Henri Brandman told the BBC on Tuesday that "Gary vigorously protests his innocence."
Glitter first found fame in the 1970s when he released nine albums including the appropriately titled Touch Me and Remember Me This Way. He hit gold with his debut single "Rock and Roll Part II," which still enjoys airplay at various sporting events around the world. Following the release of Glitter in 1972, the man famous for his platform shoes, silver wardrobe and extravagant make-up scored a string of hits in the U.K., but disappeared from American charts.
Following years of drug, alcohol and gambling addiction, Glitter
filed for bankruptcy in 1980 and attempted to overdose on sleeping
pills in 1986. In 26 years, Glitter has sold 18 million albums.
