Album Reviews
Like fellow New York weirdos Animal Collective, Gang Gang Dance make modern tribal music that seems like it comes from a strange, beautiful, largely imaginary culture. Their fourth full-length begins with what sounds like a Japanese-style folk melody beamed down by synth-wielding aliens ("Bebey"). But soon, vocalist LZA is barking out gibberish verses and enthusiastic sex noises amid heavy club rhythms, and the party's on. In fact, big beats ground this otherwise abstract set, although nothing would scan in your average disco — except maybe "Princes," where U.K. grime MC Tinchy Stryder turns an ambient excursion into a gnarly dancehall jam. Sometimes, even avant-rockers need to shake their asses.
