Schlesinger, for one, doesn't expect an Oscar to be accompanying him back to his Greenwich Village apartment. "This is plenty," he says, giving the textbook, "it's an honor to be nominated" spiel.
In fairness, besting Webber (nominated for "You Must Love Me" from "Evita" and Streisand (nominated for "I Finally Found Someone" from "The Mirror Has Two Faces"), among other adult contemporary stalwarts, will be a daunting task. "That's just ridiculous," Schlesinger chuckles, regarding his competition. "That's part of what's so funny about this. Something like this means more to people of a certain generation," he explains. "My grandparents and older relatives aren't impressed at all by the fact our band has a record out or we're on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins. They don't know who they are."
Other nominees in the category are: Diane Warren for "Because You Loved Me" from "Up Close and Personal" and James Newton Howard, Jud J. Friedman and Allan Dennis Rich for "From the First Time" from "One Fine Day."
