There's going to be a lot of RockOnTV in the next few days. Here's an update: |

A night of legends kicks off Tuesday on Comedy Central with an archived "Saturday Night Live" episode featuring Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards, who is currently incapacitated in his Connecticut home following a show-stopping fall last month. In an ominous scheduling plan, VH1 will follow with a show dedicated to the late Who drummer Keith Moon, who died of a drug overdose on September 7, 1978. VH1 will then profile another legendary performer -- Elton John -- to round out the evening.

Wednesday night also lingers in the past with a VH1 "Flashback" featuring "Ed Sullivan Show" performances by the Beatles, Bee Gees, Byrds and the Rolling Stones. Jumping ahead two decades, MTV will follow with Krush Groove 1985, a movie about a budding record producer that features cameos by Run-D.M.C., Beastie Boys and LL Cool J. Finally, Conan O'Brien will bravely welcome Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea on a rerun of his NBC late night show.

The second biggest night of the year for MTV is scheduled for Thursday, when the annual movie awards hit the small screen with performances by the Wallflowers and Natalie Imbruglia. Black Entertainment Television will add an academic edge to the evening with a discussion of music industry politics on the show "B.E.T. Tonight." Finally, David Letterman will welcome current radio regulars Fastball.

The weekend entertainment begins early Friday with a performance by Puff Daddy protTgT Usher on "Regis and Kathie Lee." Madonna follows on MuchMusic with an encore presentation of her question-and-answer session with fans held three months ago. The night closes out with live performances by Beck and Sheryl Crow on ABC's "In Concert" series from the Glastonbury Music Festival.

Summer will make its grand entrance Saturday on ABC, which will broadcast "Sounds of Summer Preview '98" with everyone from Lilith Fair founder Sarah McLachlan and the Dave Matthews Band to the recently down-sized Spice Girls and Metallica. VH1 will make a feeble counter-attack with 90 minutes of former Creedence Clearwater Revival guitarist John Fogerty. PBS will air an ancient rerun of "Austin City Limits" from 1996 featuring Lee Roy Parnell and A.J. Croce.

In the midst of launching a full-bore comeback, singer and actor David Cassidy will appear Sunday on VH1's "Behind the Music." The stellar HBO2 show "Reverb" will follow with live concert footage of rising stars Ben Harper, Chris Whitley and Mary Lou Lord. Bringing up the rear, MTV will air "Growing Up Brandy" about R&B singer Brandy and her recent duet Monica. (Anni Layne)
