True to form for this Austin trio, which scored a hit in 1998 with "The Way," its fourth CD offers bright, often dull pop rock that comes with alt-country dustiness, Seventies piano ballads and melodic clarity worthy of Fountains of Wayne, whom they almost match for faux-Beatles appeal.

To give this album two stars is absolute madness. Keep Your Wig On is the most diverse and creative album to come from this great Texas band yet. Songs like "I Get High," "Perfect World," "Til I Get It Right," and "Falling Upstairs" are all testiments, not only to how great of musicians and singers these guys are, but to their creative genious when it comes to songwriting. The vocal harmonies throughout the entire thing are purely beautiful, one of Fastball's best facets as a band. 'Wig' is their most mature work to date. While it may not be as catchy or light as was All The Pain Money Can Buy, it makes up for it in the way of an ingenious blend of musical styles and flavor. Fastball, for the rest of their career will be an underrated, yet still fantastic band. -Kevin Brosky
