Jawbreaker Tribute  Hear it Now

RS: 3.5of 5 Stars

2005

The soundtrack to Jawbreaker -- the new adolescent-angst flick starring Rose McGowan -- rocks with a cohesive cool rare in the current glut of movie-linked multiartist compilations. In the stylistic middle of this girl-positive album lies the smart, sweet-'n'-sour pop of both Imperial Teen's "Yoo Hoo" and Letters to Cleo's "I See." To one side lurk elegant gems such as Transister's "Flow," which uses evocative guitar work and liquid gurgles to celebrate the joys of drowning in love; on the other side, rowdy expressions of female power such as the Donnas' powder-punk anthem "Rock & Roll Machine." A pair of dorky cover songs adds some mindless fun when Ednaswap speed-pedal through the Police's "Next to You" and Howie Beno Featuring Cruella DeVille trippily update Cyndi Lauper's vintage MTV hit "She Bop." But despite an occasionally slackening pace, Jawbreaker has remarkably little dead air. (RS 806)
