Album Reviews
Rhyming upstart urges you to taste his wealth as he paces himself
Fabolous puts words together like jigsaw pieces that look funny on paper -- rhyming "brace they health" with "pace myself" and "taste my wealth" -- but turn hypnotic when uttered, a sort of brag-happy tone poetry. Sometimes, as on the dolorous "Can You Hear Me," he puts this skill to work over mediocre tracks.
But "Baby" has a sprightly sound reminiscent of A Tribe Called Quest's prime, and "Breathe," an epic Just Blaze production, is a small masterpiece of lyrical economy in the face of musical bombast. Fab's rhyme style forces him to ever odder boasts: On "Gangsta" he threatens to "put the red dot on you like the Japan flag." Great -- got any raps about Sweden?
