Album Reviews
The Jam were one of the greatest English bands ever, a thick-as-thieves punk trio bashing out mod anthems. On classics like 1980's Sound Affects, Paul Weller sang dippily romantic tales of boys dressing up to go race their Vespa scooters to the pub while a hundred lonely housewives clutch empty milk bottles to their hearts. Fire and Skill is the Jam's long-awaited tribute album: Each of Oasis' Gallagher brothers gets an ace solo showcase, the Beastie Boys funk up "Start!" into a cocktail-jazz highball with Cibo Matto's Miho Hatori, and Garbage recast "The Butterfly Collector" as eerie trip-hop. Even worthless U.K. bands like Reef rise to the occasion. And Weller himself, the one-time Cappuccino Kid aged into the Duke of Decaf, adds a gorgeous acoustic coda (the ultra-obscure "No One in the World") sure to make any Jam fan feel touched by the hand of mod.
