Album Reviews
Like a lot of underground rappers, Aesop Rock prefers his rhymes dense -- almost to the point of incomprehensibility. But because the New Yorker exudes an unpretentious blue-collar persona that somehow complements his dark beats, his records are strangely compelling. Bazooka Tooth sports the kind of murky production pioneered by Aesop's mentor El-P; think old-school synthesizers and horror-movie soundtracks. Aesop goes on about shitty jobs and assorted societal ills, as well as a bunch of other scenarios only hard-core fans will bother figuring out. He doesn't offer an alternative to mainstream rap so much as operate in another world altogether.
