Album Reviews
Ed Harcourt has said that he plays piano because of the instrument's sex appeal: "You can have your ashtray or a glass of wine set beside you, and you can lower your head to the keys and look all moody." On his second album, this young British musician writes songs of yearning and heartache, with tender sentiments such as "If both my wrists were slit, you'd bandage them with style and grace," and sings them like Tom Waits might after a proper gargle. With a painterly command of the palette of sound and a fondness for the sweet melody of a lullaby, Harcourt is cousin to multi-instrumental songwriters such as Brian Wilson and Badly Drawn Boy. From Every Sphere, however, has a slow, bittersweet tang of its own.
