On the tremendous "This Time," Dwight Yoakam again delivers country vocals in an understated certainty of which few of his peers can conceive. In a form of music whose best singers (George Jones, Conway Twitty) favor melodrama, Yoakam delivers cleanly. And while weepers like "Two Doors Down" and "King of Fools" belong in jukebox heaven, the rockers find Yoakam serving up absolutely earthy delights. Here, too, his take is distinctive.
