Album Reviews
Last year's Above the Rim, 1993's Judgment Night certain soundtracks have deftly showcased rap innovation. Accompanying the new comedy penned by Ice Cube and partner D.J. Pooh, Friday isn't an equivalent landmark, but it's a righteous set. New cuts by Dr. Dre (in characteristic slow simmer), the ever horny 2 Live Crew, Scarface (menacing as always) and Cube himself are standouts. Cypress Hill turn in a soggy joint; lesser knowns like Threat and the Alkaholiks almost steal the thunder from the big names. And for smooth relief, there's polished R&B (the Isleys, Rose Royce). Check out Roger, too. He manages a near miracle: breathing fresh life into "I Heard It Through the Grapevine." (RS 707)
