A few years ago, DMX's tendency to make strong, predictable albums might have seemed like his greatest weakness, but now it seems like his greatest strength. He has returned from a two-year absence with Grand Champ, a forceful march through familiar territory. Guess what? He loves dogs (unfailingly), women (conditionally) and getting in fights (inevitably).

It would be nice to hear him take a few more chances -- how about a concept album, Journey Through the Secret Life of Dogs? But then, DMX has always seemed more passionate than ambitious, and it's not a bad trade-off. "Where the Hood At" is an exhilarating dose of fight music, "Shot Down" is a marvelously sullen collaboration with 50 Cent and Styles P, and "Don't Gotta Go Home" (with Monica) is an unexpectedly sweet thug-love ballad about cheating without lying.
