"I don't train for sprints, I train for marathons," announces Evidence on the opening track of Dilated Peoples' first album in three years. He's not exaggerating: The anti-materialistic L.A. trio has been knocking around the margins of mainstream hip-hop since the mid- Nineties. Neighborhood Watch suggests that Dilated may finally be ready for some more bling: On "Caffeine," Evidence says, "I'm an underground cat but still love money and cars." The first single (and best song) is the Kanye West anthem "This Way," which features triumphant backing vocals and West's self-assured rhymes. Dilated haven't lost their gritty tone, but it looks like this neighborhood is risin' up.
