Album Reviews
David Gray's breakthrough album, 2000's White Ladder, was a surprise hit that got by on tuneful, regular-guy charm, smart electronic shadings and a homemade feel; since then, Gray has found modest success by mostly sticking to that formula. On Life in Slow Motion, this native of Manchester, England, alternates with ease between swooning singer-songwriter, pop mystic and U.K. roots-rocker: "Alibi" and "Ain't No Love" are quietly endearing piano ballads that outfit Gray's conversational croon with understated string arrangements, and "Lately" is a gorgeous slow-burner that would almost sound at home on a Van Morrison record from the early Seventies. Uptempo cuts such as the vaguely countrified "The One I Love" sound stark and a little tentative, as if Gray would rather be left alone with his piano and his daydreams. But on his most affecting cuts, such as the lilting, elegiac title track, Gray works up the kind of gentle melancholia that goes down smooth, but reappears later, in your head.
