Album Reviews
Halfway through the ten-minute version of "Bartender" -- one of the highlights of this two-disc live document from summer 2001 -- the Dave Matthews Band settles into a calm, shimmering groove, and Matthews begins to murmur -- he toys with a line, then discards it, then reaches up and flutters into his falsetto. The rest of the band members follow, and pretty soon they arrive at one of the glorious swells that have become their trademark. Those eruptions happened frequently during the Folsom Field show, but what lifts this live release to "essential" status for fans is the chance to hear sweeping epics such as "Bartender" and "Big Eyed Fish" before the group returned to the studio to record them for its last album, Busted Stuff.
