Album Reviews
If last year's Take Back the Universe and Give Me Yesterday was Creeper Lagoon's attempt at mainstreaming their sound with big guitars and muscular production, then it backfired. Not only did it fail to bring them magazine-cover notoriety, its generic radio-ready varnish effectively covered over everything that made their music notable in the first place. On Remember the Future, Creeper-founder Sharky Laguana -- the only original member in a new lineup -- sands the music back down to its primer. Warm cascades of acoustic guitars, piano and brooding vocals are threaded along on bare wisps of beats. These textured, economical arrangements are a complete about-face from those on Take Back, yet they create a melancholy mood piece that fulfills the promise of Creeper's earliest songs. It's Creeper Lagoon's most satisfying offering yet, and if it's any indication of what's to come, the future will indeed be worth remembering.
